French Green Clay AKA Sea Clay
French Green Clay was first mined in France. The clays green color comes from a combination of iron oxide and decomposed plant matter, mostly kelp, seaweed and algae. The clay is mined and then sun dried to remove excess water. It’s then ground up in huge hydraulic crushers and finely pulverized. Then set in the sun again to remove any leftover moisture. Now you have a dry fine powder ready to use for face masks, hair masks, soaps and to use internally and more. Keep reading 🙂
French Green Clay is famous for face masks. The clay has a naturally negative charge and attaches itself, like a magnet, to all the bad stuff (positively charged toxins) like oil, dirt, grease, bacteria and impurities that is on your face and in your pores. Detox and Make that Hair Shine
Did you know that you can use French Green Clay in your hair? This is especially helpful if you use a lot of over the counter hair products like gels, hairsprays etc. Over time all these products build up on your hair causing your hair to look dull and lifeless, dry and it can even damage it beyond repair. Shampoo does not get your hair super clean. Using green clay will remove product build-up from the scalp and strands while eliminating dead skin cells and flakiness from dandruff. It gently removes excess oils without stripping the hair of its natural oils. This will help stimulate the growth of healthy hair.
This works great on oily hair! It controls Sebum productions so your hair doesn’t get as greasy so fast. It deeply cleanses the scalp and fights off dandruff. It also keeps the hair cleaner longer and gives it a beautiful shine and softness. Green Clay is not recommended if you have really dry hair because of its absorbent properties.
Helps fight Inflammation
French Green Clay is known to reduce inflammation by boosting circulation which helps the body repair tissue and cells. Their ability to attract and bind to contaminants promotes the elimination of toxins that are believed to cause headaches, fatigue, digestive problems, food allergies, and lethargy. Clays are also able to draw certain toxic metals, like Mercury, out of the body.
Used as a Deodorant/Deodorizer
This Clay can also be used as a deodorizer. If you make your own deodorant you can add some French Green Clay to it. If you have stinky feet you can mix about 1/2 cup clay to 1/2 cup water and add a few drops of Tea Tree Oil. Mix well, slather all over your feet, wrap with plastic wrap and leave for about 15-20 min. Rinse well and follow with a moisturizer if you desire.
Help alleviate menstrual cramps
You can take this internally to help alleviate menstrual cramps. The recommended dosage is 1 tsp in 8 oz of water. Take daily 1-2 weeks before your cycle. During menstruation stop drinking it and make a warm poultice to rub on your lower abdomen. Mix equal amounts clay and water to get a thicker paste. You can lay plastic wrap over it to help keep in the heat. Rinse off before it dries.
General Detox
We are exposed to toxins and pollutants every day, externally and internally. Green Clay will attract and absorb heavy metals and toxins that are inside of your body. The Clay is like a magnet, pulling all the bad stuff out of your digestive system. It is recommended that you take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Add 1 teaspoon of Clay to 8 oz of water. Stir well and drink right away as the Clay will settle to the bottom. Do this every morning on an empty stomach for 21 days. Then take at least a one week break if you decide you want to do another detox. Please remember that if taking Clay water daily that you need to drink more water than usual to prevent dehydration.
First Aid
Did you know you can use French Green Clay in your first aid kit? It works wonders on many things. You can make a poultice and apply it directly on wounds, cuts and scrapes. It helps by drawing out the infection. You can use in your homemade balms for scrapes, cuts, small wounds, sprains/strains, minor burns, insect bites, sore muscles etc. You can make a paste and apply it to achy joints and muscles for some relief. Adding in some Essential Oils for pain will help. Lavender is undoubtedly the best oil for pain relief. You can also use Chamomile, Marjoram, Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Rosemary. These are all amazing essential oils that will help pain and inflammation.
Vital Minerals and Nutrients
French Green Clay is rich in nutrients and minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc, silicon, selenium, iron, copper, and cobalt, and phosphorus. Drinking Clay water delivers all of these mineral nutrients to your body while removing dangerous toxins like heavy metals, environmental pollutants and free radicals. The minerals in Green Clay are said by naturopaths to have healing properties. Copper, for instance, combats infections. Cobalt treats anemia. Selenium boosts liver function. All of these minerals together helps slow down the aging process and balance the body’s natural equilibrium.
Simple French Green Clay Face Mask
So your ready to make your own face mask? This is a simple recipe but French Green Clay should not be used on Sensitive or Dry Skin. It is good on normal, acne prone, oily, aging or combination skin.
- 1 teaspoon French Green Clay
- 1 teaspoon water
- Adjust amounts as needed to make a paste thats like a yogurt consistency
- Clean your skin prior to putting your mask on.
- Using a face brush or your fingers, apply the clay paste all over your face and neck, if desired, avoiding getting too close to your eyes.
- Leave the mask on for about 10-15 minutes but be sure to rinse it off well BEFORE it dries! You don’t want it drying on your face, it could cause redness.
- Follow up with your favorite moisturizer.
French Green Clay Hair Mask
Use this mask if you want to detox your hair of if you have oily hair. Not recommended on really dry hair.
- 5-6 tablespoons French Green Clay powder
- Juice of a small lemon (it has astringent properties for regulating sebum production)
- Distilled, Spring or Mineral Water
- Mix the Clay and Water, mix well
- Once mixed add the lemon juice
- Apply all over your head from roots to tips, cover with a shower cap to retain heat, leave on for about 20 min and then rinse very well. Use about once a week.
