Why you shouldn’t use toxic plastic wrap and instead use reusable bowl covers
There are many reasons to ditch your toxic plastic wrap and use reusable bowl covers. Plastic wrap contains toxic chemicals that can leach into your food. Keep reading to find out why you should stay away from it.
Contains chemicals that are toxic
What do you know about the ingredients in plastic wrap? Most people don’t realize the harmful chemicals used.
Before 2006 all plastic wrap made in the USA were made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) containing phthalates, chemicals called plasticizers used to increase flexibility.
Phthalates are probably toxic because they disrupt hormones, and these compounds can leach into food that’s wrapped in plastics made with them. As of 2006 though, almost all plastic wraps made in the USA are phthalate-free. Unfortunately, most are now made with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) or polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC). (Except plastic wraps used in catering and professional kitchens.)
LDPE and PVDC don’t adhere as well as plastic wraps made with PVC, but more worrying is the fact that LDPE may contain diethylhexyl adipate (DEHA), another potential endocrine disruptor that has been linked to breast cancer in women and low sperm counts in men. Since manufacturers aren’t required to list the actual chemical makeup of their plastic wrap on the boxes, consumers are at risk.
Another great concern is that plastic wrap will leach those toxic chemicals into your food when you use it to cover your dish to microwave. The FDA advises against this!
Save the planet and reduce waste
Millions of people use plastic wrap every day. Millions of people are throwing used plastic wrap in the trash every day. That trash goes to the landfill and keeps piling up and piling up. Help do your part in saving our planet by swapping your plastic wrap with reusable bowl covers!
You’ll save money by using reusable bowl covers
Ummm…who doesn’t like to save money? Especially these days and going into the 2nd year of Covid prices are on the rise with everything! My son LOVES popcorn and it went from $4.50/box to $6.98/box in a matter of a week. Toilet paper costs more. Paper towels, plastic wrap, shampoo and soap, meats, produce and canned foods. It’s crazy how much everything has gone up in the last couple of weeks. Then you’re paying more in gas to get you to work and anywhere else.
I try to save money any way I can…and I’m damn good at it! I make a lot of my own products and make homemade meals from scratch. You know what else I make? Bowl Covers 😁 I make and sell them all over and people can’t get enough of them! They’ll last a really long time, possibly forever!
They’re pretty 😍
Imagine having a get together and you made all this amazing food. What better to cover it with than homemade reusable bowl covers! They’re pretty and work better than toxic plastic wrap. You’re friends and family will love them and want some for themselves. They are safe (well mine are) but you still shouldn’t use them in the microwave.
How can you use reusable bowl covers
You can cover any dish with reusable bowl covers just like you would use plastic wrap. I especially love using them at cookouts to keep the bugs off the food! You can cover your leftovers with bowl covers and put them in the refrigerator. You can use them to cover bowls of potato chips or fruit & veggies. I use them to cover my dough when I’m baking bread and waiting for it to rise. You can use them when you’re camping. I use one on my kitchen-aid bowl. My kitchen-aid sits on my counter all the time and when I’m not using it, there is always a pretty bowl cover on it.
Make your own bowl covers or buy them?
So now that you know why plastic wrap is bad, and why you shouldn’t use it, what will you do? Are you going to buy some materials and make your own? If you have a sewing machine it’s not too difficult. If you’re too busy and don’t have time, or you just don’t know where to begin, will you buy some bowl covers and ditch the plastic wrap?
