Ah the dainty dandelion…how does Dandelion Tea or Coffee sound? Or how about a Dandelion Latte? Do you like yours Iced or Hot? Mmmmm…..that’s what I’m talking about. Ok keep reading guys.

Dandelion Tea and Coffee is basically the same thing. If you’re trying to give up your coffee this is a good substitute…BUT it’s caffeine free! For some giving up your caffeinated coffee will never happen. For those who want to give the caffeine up please keep reading! OR just add a shot of expresso for a caffeine boost!

If you’re like me, you love to look outside and see all the beautiful little dandelions swaying in the wind. I pick them every chance I get and make a lot of things with them from tea or coffee or my favorite Dandelion Salve. There are MANY things you can do, but that’s another subject.

Many people ask which part of the Dandelion is best. Well that depends on what you like. The root is mostly used for coffee and packs the most health benefits but you can use the flowers and leaves. This post will be talking about the roots only. I will provide links at the end with information, including recipes on using the flowers and leaves for tea.

So anyhow back to the tea/coffee. You want to use the roots for this. It is best if you dig up your own dandelion roots. You know where they come from and whether or not pesticides were used. If you would rather buy them I highly recommend Frontier Dandelion Roots

Start by roasting the roots. If you’re using freshly picked roots put them in an oven set at about 325 and bake for about 40 min. If you’re using a purchased bag of already dried roots then they will roast much faster so bake for 15 at 350 degrees.

After the roots are roasted it’s time to boil them along with whatever spices you are using. You can use Cardamom or Cinnamon and Fennel for a warm spicy flavor. You can try cacao, honey, maple syrup or vanilla extract. Some people add Burdock or Chicory root.

Boil 2 tbsp of Dandelion Root in 2 cups water. Add spices (save honey, maple syrup or vanilla extract for the end) When it comes to a boil, simmer for 10-15 minutes. Strain and add whatever sweetener you are using. I buy honey from a local man. You can also add milk if you choose, to make a Latte!

Get creative in adding different things you may like. I prefer Coconut Milk over regular cows milk. You can also add some of the following to your Dandelion Coffee

  • Coconut Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Cacao Nibs
  • Caramel
  • Honey
  • Agave Nectar
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Burdock Root
  • Chicory Root
  • Mint
  • Peppermint stick or candy cane? Hmmmm!
  • Lemons or Limes
  • Cinnamon
  • Cardamom
  • Fennel

Let me know what you use in your Dandelion Coffee! Below you will find a few more recipe combinations that I enjoy!

Chocolate Dandelion Coffee

Who doesn’t LOVE Chocolate?! Try it, I promise it is delicious!

Once you make your cup of Dandelion Coffee/Tea you can add this super yummy blend

Blend 1 tbsp Cocoa Powder, 3 tsp Coconut Sugar and a pinch of salt together. I find that using one of those mini blenders helps a lot when mixing powders into liquids. Add this to your coffee and stir well. Top off with a little Coconut Milk and Voila!

I have not tried this yet but wouldn’t Mint be tasty with the Chocolate? I have a ton of Chocolate Mint growing outside and never thought to add any until now. It’s mid November right now so I guess I’ll have to wait until Spring to try this. If anybody has tried this let me know in the comments below!
